What Happened to the Mermaid Baby? See What Happened in This Surprising Case
Some children around the world are truly unique, whether due to a specific characteristic or a condition they were born with. Today, get to know unique children around the world who will truly amaze you. You have certainly never seen anything like this.
The Real-Life Little Mermaid
If you have never watched the movie The Little Mermaid, you have at least heard of it and know what the main character is like. Have you ever imagined what it would be like to see a real mermaid? In movies and cartoons, she is always portrayed as a lovely underwater creature who desperately wishes to walk upon the land. All the parents of the child we will meet today wanted was for her to have a happy ending, just like in the movies.
In 2004, in Peru, Milagros Cerrón came into the world, immediately shocking doctors and her parents. The baby’s mother had not undergone the necessary medical examinations during her pregnancy, meaning not even a single ultrasound was performed prior to birth. The state in which the baby was born left doctors wondering how the child even survived delivery. Milagros was born with her legs fused together, looking much like a mermaid’s tail. This condition is known as sirenomelia, or mermaid syndrome. Generally, babies with this condition pass away before birth or suffer from severe complications affecting both the kidneys and the bladder.
Her legs were tightly fused all the way down to her feet, and the poor girl’s digestive and urinary tracts shared a single pathway. To make matters worse, one of her kidneys was deformed and the other was extremely small. Milagros came into the world to fight for her life and overcome the obstacles imposed upon her since birth. Fortunately, her heart and lungs were completely healthy, and that is what encouraged the doctors to devise a plan to help the girl and give her a chance at a normal life.
Several news outlets in Lima learned of her case, and many people mobilized to pay for the numerous surgeries she would need from infancy through adolescence. Her parents cared for the little girl with immense love and affectionately nicknamed her the Little Mermaid. In June 2005, the moment many had been waiting for arrived. Doctor Luis Rubio led the team with the primary goal of giving the girl separated legs. The doctor and his team were extremely nervous during the operation because the procedure had been attempted very few times before.
Just two days later, tests confirmed that the surgery was a success. In 2006, her parents brought her back for another procedure. On that day, many people who had been following the girl’s story and knew she would be there gathered at the hospital to share words of solidarity during that difficult moment. Once the surgery concluded, rather than simply announcing it was a success, the doctor held up her legs to show that they had truly been separated. The parents smiled with emotion, and the father could not hold back his tears. After all, what he desired most was that when kindergarten started, the little girl would be able to walk normally alongside the other children.
In 2008, that profound dream became reality when, at four years old, the little girl walked through the school entrance. She grew into a cheerful, vibrant child who loved playing with her classmates. But the story does not end there. In 2012, something her father had long feared happened: Milagros urgently needed a kidney transplant. The seven-year-old girl emerged from surgery with a functioning kidney and a completely reconstructed urinary system.
Unfortunately, the girl will have to undergo three to four more surgeries as she grows older. Once Milagros turns eighteen or older, she will be able to undergo a procedure to correct her feet, which are slightly arched. Milagros is truly a miracle among many other cases. She is exceptionally special, both to her parents and to everyone who has followed her journey.
The Turtle Shell Boy
A young boy was nicknamed the turtle boy because of a birthmark that formed a shell on his back. Didier Montalvo suffered from birth with this rare disease that covered almost half of his body. He and his parents were forced to live far away from their neighbors because the entire village believed the boy was this way because he was born during an eclipse, as if a curse had been placed upon him.
Didier lived isolated from other children, could not go to school, and could not even be baptized. However, his life changed completely when a renowned surgeon named Neil Bulstrode learned about his case through social media and decided to help. The doctor, who specializes in congenital conditions, explained as soon as he contacted the family that it was not a curse at all, but rather a rare condition called congenital melanocytic nevi. This condition usually does not have a specific cause, but many researchers believe it stems from a mutation in the development of the baby’s skin cells while still in the womb.
The parents sent photos of the boy’s back to the surgeon. As soon as the doctor saw them, his first feeling was deep compassion for the poor boy. He felt that if he could remove that mark, he would undoubtedly improve the child’s life significantly. He traveled to Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, and contracted some surgeons he already knew to assemble a team to perform the operation free of charge.
The mark had grown so large that they had to run several tests to check the depth of the condition. Upon examining it closely, the doctor realized this was the worst case he had ever seen, and they braced for the worst. Didier’s first operation lasted hours. The doctors had to perform multiple procedures on the skin, and the boy had to endure a great deal of painful operations. But it was entirely worth it, because the joy he felt upon seeing himself free of the mark was immeasurably greater.
Nowadays, Didier enjoys life and is seen as a completely normal child by his neighborhood. He is studying and is expected to be baptized very soon. The other children no longer feel scared of him and have stopped calling him the turtle boy.
Muhammad Kalim
In a small village in the state of Jharkhand, India, a boy suffered for years with a mysterious and rare condition that caused his hands to grow disproportionately, worsening as he grew older. When he was born, his hands appeared unusually large with exceptionally long fingers. His hands were twice the size of a normal baby’s hands. The boy frequently suffered from stomach aches and headaches, but his father did not have enough money to take him to a doctor. In India, unfortunately, people earn very little—that is, if they manage to find any work at all—leaving very little hope for progress.
For the young boy, all daily tasks became a massive struggle. His disability often prevented him from eating, taking a bath, and even dressing himself because his fingers would not bend properly. Each of the boy’s hands measured over thirty-three centimeters in length and weighed more than eight kilograms. He did not go to school because they refused to accept him as a student, claiming that his deformity would unnerve the other children.
However, after his story reached the internet and several international news outlets, doctors and specialists in southern India contacted the family to help. A few days later, at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, they examined the boy and diagnosed his condition as localized gigantism. There, he underwent several surgeries and physical therapy sessions to make his hands as functional as possible. Thrilled with the initial results, the doctors proceeded with the surgery on his left hand. After a few months of healing procedures and medications, the little boy finally got the hands he had always dreamed of having and was finally able to live a normal life alongside his parents and siblings.
