Twins share a special bond that makes their relationship truly unique. When one baby was on the brink of death, its parents placed it next to its twin, and what happened next brought tears to the eyes of everyone who witnessed it. If their idea differs from ours, it might spark a conversation, even if it’s nothing too serious. These lighthearted discussions are part of what makes relationships so special. Like many couples, Brandy Guettler and Tommy Buckmeyer had similar conversations while they were together. They, too, dreamed of giving their future children the very best. But while they envisioned a perfect future, they overlooked the fact that life doesn’t always go according to plan.
Eventually, the couple married, and Brandy became pregnant. A few weeks later, an ultrasound revealed they were expecting twins. Brandy and Tommy had always been big fans of twins. One of the twins, Hawk, was diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a rare condition affecting the lungs. According to the doctor, Hawk was in critical condition. Tommy went back to Brandy’s room, and when she saw him, she knew something was wrong. He put his hand around her neck and told her, “Our baby is dying.”
Just minutes before, they had been the happiest parents in the world, and now they were the saddest. But they weren’t ready to give up, not yet. “We’re going to fight for him,” Brandy told Tommy, and together they said a short prayer. The little boy simply had to live. It was such an emotional moment. Tommy and Brandy held hands and tried to stay strong as their little boys experienced a special twin moment. The moment Mason felt Hawk, he reached out his arms to him. It was as if he knew Hawk was a part of him. In 1995, Kyrie and Brielle were born in a Massachusetts hospital, 12 weeks before their due date. They were in quite poor condition and each weighed only about one kilogram. The usual practice in such cases is to place the babies in incubators to reduce the risk of infection. The girls were placed in separate incubators to prevent cross-infection. As the days passed, Kyrie’s condition improved, and she even gained weight. But Brielle was developing much more slowly, crying and screaming constantly. Nothing the doctors did could calm her down. Worse still, she wasn’t gaining weight and was experiencing breathing and heart rate problems.
Despite all their efforts, Brielle’s condition continued to deteriorate. A nurse, Gail Kasparian, who had a soft spot for twins, did everything in her power to help Brielle. She held her, wrapped her in blankets, and spent time wiping the mucus from her nose. But nothing seemed to work. The medical team continued to do their best, but time was running out. At this point, in a desperate attempt to save Brielle, Nurse Gail had an idea. She thought of placing Brielle next to her twin sister so they could feel each other’s presence. This practice violated hospital rules, but Nurse Gail could no longer bear to see Brielle fighting for her life alone.
