Remember the Boy who Weighed 3 kg at Age 7? Here’s what happened to him after ADOPTION
At just seven years old, this boy weighed only three kilograms. Doctors warned that he might not survive due to his severe health issues. However, a loving couple adopted him, and what followed was nothing short of a miracle.
After Priscilla Morse married her husband David, they raised three wonderful children: two biological sons and a Russian girl they had adopted. Despite their adoptive daughter being born with a heart condition and Down syndrome, they devoted themselves to addressing her medical needs and providing her with the best care. Over time, she improved and flourished in their loving family.
Just when Priscilla and her husband thought their family was complete and they were done with adoption, a photo of a young boy deeply touched Priscilla’s heart. In June 2014, while browsing her Facebook feed, Priscilla came across a post from an adoption organization. The post featured a starving six-year-old boy from Bulgaria who appeared frail and severely malnourished. It was evident that he wouldn’t survive much longer unless a family stepped forward to adopt him. As soon as she saw him, she couldn’t get him out of her mind. She immediately knew that this boy was meant to be her son.
“I don’t know how to describe it, but you look at them and you just know,” she said.
However, she couldn’t understand how a boy his age could be so emaciated. She decided to learn more about his story, and what she uncovered broke her heart. The boy had endured an agonizing childhood, spending most of his early years confined to various hospitals because of his critical condition and frail appearance. No one had wanted to adopt him. At that moment, Priscilla knew she had to step in to get him out of that orphanage and give him a fighting chance. She realized she might be the only one willing to bring him into a home.
Yet, she wasn’t sure how to broach the subject with her husband. The two had previously agreed that if they ever fostered or adopted again, it would be from regions where children were overlooked the most.
“We had decided long ago that if we were going to adopt, it would be from countries where no one else was coming for the kids—where children in third-world countries were locked away in orphanages,” she said.
Unsure of how to approach David about the Bulgarian boy, she simply showed him the child’s photograph. What happened next took her completely by surprise. She was stunned by her husband’s immediate openness to bringing the little boy home. After reading the full account, David was deeply moved by his plight; knowing they had the means and capacity to care for him, he agreed it was the right thing to do.
In September 2014, Priscilla and David initiated the adoption process for the boy, whom they would name Ryan. By November 2015, they had finalized all the necessary paperwork to bring Ryan home to the United States. They traveled to Bulgaria to meet their soon-to-be son in person. By that point, the fragile boy was already seven years old, yet weighed a mere eight pounds.
When the couple arrived at the orphanage, they were heartbroken by the sheer number of children longing for care. But seeing Ryan in person was an overwhelming shock. Priscilla could hardly believe how tiny he was for his age and feared he might not make it through.
“He was barely alive,” Priscilla recalled, describing that first encounter.
It was a terrifying experience. When the nurses handed him over, she initially wondered if they had brought her the wrong child because of his extreme frailty. Ryan had been starved for so long at the orphanage that he had developed a habit of regurgitating his food, fearful of when he would ever eat again. His malnourished body was covered in fine hair—a classic sign of advanced starvation. In such bleak circumstances, he had resorted to vomiting simply to cope and survive.
Over time, however, Priscilla and Ryan began to form a deep bond.
“By the second or third visit, we were swinging him around and tickling him. For as tiny as he was, he wasn’t as fragile as I initially thought. He enjoyed the interaction,” she explained.
Eventually, Priscilla and David brought Ryan back home to the United States, taking him straight to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where a medical team stood waiting. Upon laying eyes on Ryan, the physicians were moved to tears, stunned that anyone would take on a child whose chances of survival were so paper-thin.
“I had never in my life seen doctors look at a child and burst into tears,” she recounted. “They even called Social Services and said, ‘I’m sorry, but he’s probably going to die.'”
Despite the dire prognosis, Ryan’s new parents refused to let go. Thankfully, doctors successfully placed a feeding tube directly into his intestines, allowing his body to absorb the vital nutrients he had been starved of for years. Over the next thirteen months in the hospital, Ryan staged an incredible turnaround, gaining around fifteen pounds.
The medical team was astounded by his resilience. They soon moved forward with surgical procedures to address his other conditions, correcting his clubbed feet and treating severe scoliosis with spinal rod placement. Day by day, Ryan’s progress defied expectations. His strength surged, his speech and communication blossomed, and he gained far better control of his hands and feet.
Ryan was eventually able to attend public school as a third grader, steadily hitting every milestone his care team set out for him. While the road to recovery was demanding, Priscilla shared that his therapists and physicians remained remarkably optimistic that he would continue to flourish and reach his full potential.
Ryan went on to surpass every limitation placed on him. In May 2020, he celebrated his twelfth birthday surrounded by his loving family. Photos from the milestone were shared on the Facebook page Saving Baby Ryan, created to document his remarkable journey. In those pictures, he was utterly unrecognizable from the hollow, starving child of just a few years prior.
Priscilla shared that Ryan is thriving, living life to the fullest alongside his family and proving every grim prediction wrong. He has built deep bonds with his siblings and lives enveloped in genuine warmth and devotion. She hopes that by being transparent about his journey, others might be inspired to open their doors to children who need it most.
“People write off special-needs kids because it looks scary, but these kids are worth it. They deserve to be loved just like any other child,” she said. “I hope Ryan’s story encourages others to realize that every child deserves a chance to live with a family. With the right family, anything is possible. Special-needs kids aren’t just special because of their health issues—they’re special in every way you can imagine.”
Adopting Ryan did not mark the end of their journey. Priscilla and David later welcomed another child with special needs into their home—a young girl named Gigi from Ukraine—and also celebrated the birth of another biological son, Will. Thanks to the fierce dedication and unconditional love of the parents who refused to give up on him, Ryan was given not just a second chance at life, but a genuine future full of promise.
