New Mom Loses It When She Peeks Under Baby’s Blanket
She could feel the bile rising up from her stomach. This was an accident, right? Why was it in a blanket? She could feel tears stream down her face as she cradled her newborn. It was fine before the nurse came to take away her baby. What had happened in the short time she was away from her baby? As she looked down at the blanket, she knew nothing would ever be the same again.
It was a happy day when Lauren discovered that she was pregnant. She already had a small boy named Caden with her husband, Chad McDevitt. She knew exactly what to expect this time around. But when Lauren took a look at her baby from underneath the blanket, she couldn’t believe what she saw. She felt her stomach flip. This wasn’t happening. Not like this.
Lauren had always dreamed of being a mother. So when she married her romantic companion, Chad, she couldn’t wait to start a family. After her firstborn, she was so happy to hear that she was expecting a second. Caden was her whole world. She had so much love to give and was ecstatic to start showing it to her next child. But she had no idea what was about to happen.
When Lauren’s water broke, she knew what to do. She had done this before. She stayed calm and got into the car while her husband drove her to the hospital. She wanted it to be a less stressful labor than her first one. She was ready for this, but she could never have prepared herself for what was to come after delivery when she looked down at her baby girl and saw what had happened.
There were no complications of any sort during Lauren’s pregnancy and birth. After six hours, she gave birth to Everly, a beautiful baby girl. She was healthy, and Lauren knew her son back home would be over the moon. Chad was equally ecstatic. He called their family and excitedly shared the news of their new baby. But he spoke too soon. It seemed that their life was turning out perfectly. Even though she had just gone through labor, she fought off the fatigue to continue holding her child. She looked at her husband, her daughter, and her son. It was all she had ever wanted.
Yet Lauren would be quite surprised by what was in store for her next. It would flip her world upside down.
More and more people started flooding into the hospital room—Lauren and Chad’s friends and family. They wanted to meet the newest addition to the family. They laughed warmly as they saw the beautiful baby girl who brought such joy to the room. Lauren even joined in on the fun, as exhausted as she was. But she could never have foreseen what would happen next.
The family was already utterly enamored with little Everly. They all adored the little girl. But then Lauren’s aunt mentioned that the newborn needed changing. The nurse stepped in and took Everly away to change her. Lauren had no idea that things would be different when she returned.
Lauren simply lacked the strength to change Everly herself after the grueling six hours of labor she had endured; she was just too worn out. The nurse smiled and left the room carrying the infant who wasn’t even a day old. Lauren didn’t feel entirely settled about the situation. Something just felt off. She had no idea that her maternal intuition was right.
After about fifteen minutes, the nurse returned with Everly. She placed her gently back into her mother’s arms and left. But as she walked out the door, Lauren could have sworn she caught a subtle smirk on her face. It didn’t look like an ordinary smile of joy, but rather something far more mischievous. What had the nurse been doing, and what was she planning?
Cuddling her newborn, Lauren noticed that Everly was swaddled unusually tightly in the blanket. She could only see her dark eyes and wisps of fine hair peeking out at the top. The nurse was obviously skilled at swaddling, yet Lauren had no clue what was tucked away inside.
With more relatives arriving at the hospital wanting a cuddle and a proper look at baby Everly, several expressed slight disappointment that they couldn’t see much beyond her eyes and hair. They urged Lauren to loosen the blanket so everyone could get a closer look. Lauren agreed and began unwrapping it, completely unaware of what awaited her.
She was more than happy to show off her daughter. After all, she was an adorable baby, and Lauren knew how much the older relatives would melt at the sight of her. But as she peeled back the layers, the smile on Lauren’s face faded, replaced by a sudden wave of shock.
Everly had been wrapped so snugly that Lauren found it difficult to undo. The nurse who changed her had deliberately bundled her tight. But why? What should have been a simple, tender family moment suddenly took a bewildering turn.
Lauren finally managed to untuck her baby from the snug blanket. Feeling every eye in the room upon her as everyone leaned in to see the newborn’s face, baby Everly was finally free. Lauren prepared to show her aunts and uncles.
Yet as the blanket fell away, Lauren noticed something else tucked against her baby. Her heart dropped. She froze in her tracks, color draining completely from her face. This had to be a joke, right? She tried to speak, but the words caught in her throat. She was entirely fixated on what she had just uncovered.
Holding her child close as a chill ran down her spine, the emotional overload took over. She let out a sudden shriek, and the laughter and lighthearted chatter in the room came to an abrupt halt.
As concerned family members gathered around Lauren and baby Everly, confusion swept through the room. Why was Lauren crying and crying out? The baby had been completely fine before the nurse took her away. What had changed? What had the nurse done?
While tears streamed down Lauren’s cheeks, Chad remained surprisingly calm. He leaned down, kissed her forehead, and gently reassured her that everything was alright. Little did Lauren know, Chad had been in on the scheme from the start.
With Lauren’s emotional reaction filling the room, observant relatives caught a glimpse of Everly’s outfit. It was a fresh onesie, but entirely different from the one she had been wearing before the diaper change. The mystery deepened quickly. Lauren knew she had to clear things up right then and there.
Overwhelmed and searching for words, she wiped her tears and lifted baby Everly up into view, showing the entire room what the baby was wearing. As everyone leaned in closer, the whole room gasped in unison.
Chad looked Lauren straight in the eye, took a breath, and spoke:
“Will you marry me?”
Lauren was left speechless, an overwhelming wave of joy washing over her exhaustion.
“Yes!” she cried out.
With the family erupting in cheers and excitement over the surprise proposal, everyone finally got a clear look at the lettering printed across baby Everly’s onesie.
Lauren held her daughter close with a radiant smile, revealing the sweet message that had been hidden under the blanket the entire time:
“Mommy, will you marry Daddy?”
