Helena and Yu Spengler have been together since their school days. They married young and had three wonderful children over the years. When Darina arrived in the world, the doctors remained silent. Instead of placing the newborn in her mother’s arms, they took her away without saying a word. After Helena recovered from the birth, she wanted to see her… The nurse, wanting to prepare her daughter, asked, “Are you ready?”

Darina was so weak that she could only survive in an incubator.

At first, Helena saw the little girl’s legs, then her head, and finally her face. At that moment, the mother fainted. Helena suffered a shock and only regained consciousness in the resuscitation room. The sight of her own daughter had frightened her. Later, the doctors told her that Darina had been born with a rare genetic disease known as Nager syndrome.

This disease makes the person’s face look like a distorted mask. Judging by Darina’s state of health, the doctors didn’t know if she would survive the next few months or even the next few weeks. The doctors advised the mother to leave the girl at the clinic and place her in the care of an orphanage.

Then her husband, Yuri, entered the room to visit his wife and daughter. When the nurse showed the baby to the father, Helena was already fearing his reaction, but Yuri didn’t care. “Here is our sweet little girl,” he cried, kissing his little angel.

Shortly after, Darina was handed over to her parents’ care.

Not even their closest friends and family could understand the couple’s decision. Despite being told several times that Darina would never be able to lead a normal life, that she would die soon, and that this would destroy her life, they refused to listen to these criticisms. After the story was publicized, a fundraising event was organized, and the family received an enormous amount of support from generous donors.

Specialists analyzed opportunities for Darina’s surgery in her own country, but since her weight is similar to that of a 1-year-old child at 11,300g, they concluded that she should be operated on abroad and recommended Green Ormond Street Hospital in London. In 2019, she underwent an 11-hour surgery during which doctors created a jaw for the little girl.

A charity helped fund the operation, the first of a series of treatments that Darina must currently have. Darina is currently undergoing more procedures that adjusted her lips, cheeks, and jaw. The only certainty we can have is that Darina is very loved by her family. We can only wish her much strength and luck for her future, but with incredible siblings and nephews, she already has a wonderful support network to help her overcome life’s obstacles.
