A young Chick-fil-A manager was captured on surveillance video leaping out of a drive-thru window after a frantic scene in a nearby vehicle caught his attention. Logan Simmons, a 19-year-old manager at a Chick-fil-A in Flowery Branch, Georgia, was working his usual shift one moment, and vaulting out the drive-thru window into a customer’s car the next. His instinctive bravery gives patrons yet another reason to admire the restaurant chain, but the reason Logan found himself in the right place at the exact right moment is deeply personal.

Logan’s ordinary Tuesday shift took an abrupt turn when, standing near the open drive-thru window, he overheard terrified screams outside. A panicked mother was yelling that her six-year-old son’s seatbelt was choking him.

At that exact second, Logan’s instincts kicked in. Surveillance footage shows him hauling himself through the narrow drive-thru window and dashing straight across the lot toward the lane.

Reaching the vehicle, Logan jumped into the back seat. The young boy was turning red, his airway completely blocked by the tangled belt wrapped tightly around his neck. The child’s mother was begging for help. The boy’s face was losing color, his tongue swollen and red.

“He’d been home for a couple of hours and he said nonchalantly, ‘I saved a kid’s life today.’ And I was like, ‘What?'” recalled his mother, Teri Simmons.

To Logan, it felt like just another day on the job.

“I just jumped out the window and ran straight down to the car,” Logan said. “I think it was the quickest option. Like, it was right there, I saw the car, and as soon as I realized what was going on, all I could think about was getting to the car as quickly as possible. So I jumped through the window.”

“I’m still a little shocked by what happened, but I’m grateful I was able to help,” Logan stated, adding in a company release: “I’m just so thankful everyone is okay.”

Following the incident, Logan was hailed as a local hero, receiving an outpouring of gratitude from his community.

“Everyone’s been cheering and shouting my name, asking me to come sit with them and stuff,” he shared, noting that locals were stopping by the Flowery Branch location purely to meet him. “It’s been really nice. I do feel like a hero.”

The young boy’s mother also phoned the restaurant to express her immense gratitude, calling Logan a hero for saving her son’s life. His own mother couldn’t hold back her admiration either.

“I’m amazed. Like, he didn’t panic. As his mother, I would have panicked—I’d have been running around going, ‘Oh my gosh, what do we do?'”

Yet Logan’s character runs much deeper than a single brave act. A difficult personal history was what had put him at that Chick-fil-A counter to begin with. Having lost his father to cancer when he was just eight years old, the teen had taken on long hours to save up for his first car.

Upon learning his story, the community rallied behind him. November Smiles, a children’s charity dedicated to bringing hope to young people facing hardship, presented Logan with a financial gift to contribute toward his car fund. They also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help him secure a reliable vehicle, so he would no longer have to rely on rides from his mother and siblings to get to work.
